In defense of the Kiwi palate
Posted: July 3rd, 2007 | Author: thechewer | Filed under: Miscellanelife | 6 Comments »Gorgeous has made some (unfavourable) comments about food options in New Zealand. I feel it is my patriotic duty to mount a defence.
Actually, everything she says is pretty much true except for giving the impression that the only fast food option we have is Mcdonalds. Although, the place has certainly progressed in terms of the range of food available it is still pretty pricey compared with the States. The one thing that seems much more readily available here as opposed to the States (at least in the areas of California I’ve been to) is Middle Eastern style food. I LOVE kebabs. I’m particularly partial to falafel, especially ones prepared by Costas Souvalaki in Christchurch (we’re going to be in Christchurch weekend next and that is one of my definite tour stops along with Mayur Indian Restaurant for some lamb korma).
I know Gorgeous watches in horror sometimes at the things I eat – especially when its vegemite and banana sandwiches, but she’d be the first to admit there are certain dishes she has not only got used to but some she even enjoys now. I mean, a cheese and pineapple toastie is hard to beat lunchtime fare along with a bowl of Pams Tomato Soup. And don’t forget pavlova. As for the “Kiwi Burger” at McDs.. it’s pretty good although if I’m interested in that style of burger I’m more inclined to go to a fish and chip shop.
Gorgeous is an excellent cook, and I’m looking forward to eating the leftovers from the enchiladas for lunch today…Hmmmmm eeeenchiladaaas…
I’d like to point out that I said that I’ve gotten used to it. I’ve adapted. As you said, cheese and pineapple toasties are okay. And I eat meat pies too.
[...] comment to Tina in the post “Chicken Enchiladas” has caused a bit of a family feud. Handsome has written a rebuttal to my comment, in defense of his country’s food. And so, in order to maintain family harmony, [...]

Yeah, I think you did! Just one more thing I have to thank you for :] It was good talking to you too.
Wait till you get to the USA and you get to eat In-n-Out and Taco Bell. Mmmmmmm!
I am very partial to In and Out – and I’ve only just recently been made aware of the “secret” menu which I intend to try out :) And I still remember my first Taco Bell Chalupa (sp?) – hmmmmm
